Cimicifuga also called black cohosh, rattleroot, and squaw root, is a native of the United States and was first used by the Indians in North America. It is used as an alterative and sedative to the arterial and nervous systems. As a cardiac stimulant it is safer than digitalis. It acts as an emetic, and is also used to contract the uterus, for chronic bronchitis, hysteria, wasting diseases, and rheumatism. It is slightly narcotic, and large doses can cause verticgo, tremors, reduced pulse, and vomiting. The leaves are said to drive bugs away if laid about a room.
